Traveling Vietnam Veterans Wall event set for July 7-10 in Gonvick

Bemidji Pioneer - 6/30/2022

Jun. 30—GONVICK — The Gonvick Lions and the Clearwater County Veterans Service Office invites the public to join them in honoring local Vietnam veterans at the Gonvick Fire Hall for the

Traveling Vietnam Veterans Wall July 7-10

.

The wall is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., standing six feet tall at the center and covering almost 300 feet from end to end.

According to the VTMW website

, this traveling memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington, where the original memorial stands.

The program will start at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, with an opening ceremony featuring guest speaker Wendall Affield followed by the posting of the colors by the U.S. Army. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. for a free-will offering with all proceeds going to the Gonvick Fire Department.

On Friday, July 8, there will be a brat feed starting at 1 p.m. available free of charge for veterans, and for a free-will offering to non-veterans.

In addition, the Traveling Wall event will have many vendors from the Veterans Association and other veteran advocate groups.

The memorial will be available for viewing 24 hours a day from July 7 to July 10.

"This is a way to not only remember our fallen but also help the living," Clearwater County Veterans Service Officer Logan LeClair said in a release. "There is absolutely no admission cost as we just want to see our local Minnesota veterans honored."
