Squantum intersections to be named for two Marine veterans from Quincy

The Patriot Ledger - 5/21/2021

QUINCY — Two intersections in Squantum are set to be named in honor of two QuincyMarine Corps veterans.

The intersection of Sonoma Road and Essex Street will be named after Daniel Dewey and the intersection of Standish Road and Bellevue Road will be named for Jonathan O'Driscoll.

Dewey was a sergeant in the Marine Corps in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after being disabled in combat, City Councilor Bill Harris said.

Dewey worked as a probation officer and was appointed to the state's parole board by Gov. Bill Weld in the 1990s. He was involved with the Quincy Veterans Council for many years, Harris said.

Dewey was married for 39 years to his wife and had two children and two grandchildren. He died of COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic.

"He was a person of great character, great opinion," Harris said. "He was dedicated to our veterans and he was just a really nice guy to sit next to. ... This honor is truly worthy of Dan Dewey."

O'Driscoll graduated from North Quincy High School in 2004 and worked as a carpenter with his father before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2009 and achieving the rank of corporal. He then served as a Quincy firefighter in Wollaston for six years.

"Not only does my family know the family, everybody knows the family in our community," Harris said of the O'Driscolls.

Jonathan O'Driscoll was married Allison and had a son named Nolan, who was less than a year old when he died, Harris said.

"I can remember my wife telling me the story, he was so happy when he was able to move back into Squantum where he grew up," Harris said. "He bought a house and yelled to my wife, 'Hey Carrol! We just bought a house! We're back!' He lit up the room. He was a real great kid. Unfortunately, things happen."

City councilors unanimously approved the dedications at a meeting earlier this week.
