Park district to spend $45,000 to replace flagpoles and lights in Naperville's Veterans Park

Naperville Sun - 2/4/2021

Feb. 3—Improvements to Naperville'sVeterans Park, including new flagpoles, flags, lighting and parking lot apron, will be done this winter and spring.

The first stage of the $45,000 project begins later this month when workers replace the park's flagpoles, Naperville Park District Planning Director Eric Shutes said.

"We consider this housekeeping. We want to start (this month) and finish it ahead of the Memorial Day weekend," Shutes said.

District officials will work with the VFW to properly dispose of the flags, he said.

The 14-acre park at 303 E. Gartner Road is leased by the park district from the city of Naperville. It features a plaza, flag display, open space, parking lot and access to the DuPage River Trail.

At some point, it is also to be the location of a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, which will be the first in Illinois. Local residents are working with the park district and the nonprofit Woody Williams Foundation in raising the $97,000 needed to erect the memorial.

"(The improvement work) is a totally separate project," Shutes said. "We are aware of the project that is being developed by the community group but this is separate."

In addition to installing new flagpoles and flags, the park's lighting is being upgraded to LED fixtures and the parking lot's driveway apron will be replaced, he said.

The park will remain open for the duration of the work other than for a temporary closure needed to do the parking lot work, he said.
