BRIEF: James Strickell, 44, retired Navy
San Diego Union-Tribune (CA) - 2/6/2016
Feb. 05--James Strickell retired from the Navy as a senior chief petty officer about six years before his death, according to a medical examiner's report and family social media posts.
He developed Type 1 diabetes, which would have complicated his military service. A family member's Facebook post says the fight against diabetes "got the best of him."
Strickell found work as an appliance manager at a Lowe's, even as he suffered from PTSD and depression, his wife told the medical examiner. The two were experiencing marital stress, according to the medical examiner.
Strickell used a rifle to end his life in March 2014 in the Jamul RV park where he lived with his wife. The park manager checked on him on a Tuesday morning because he hadn't been seen since Saturday. Investigators found suicide letters in sealed envelopes addressed to different family members and a wedding photograph on the kitchen counter.
The medical examiner found an antidepressant in his system.
