Faces of the Stand Down: A place veterans feel they belong

Appeal-Democrat - 8/25/2018

Aug. 25--About 600 people attended the 19th annual Yuba-Sutter Veterans Stand Down's first two days. Mike Nichols, president of the Stand Down, said it was great seeing so many people receiving services and hoped to see the overall number grow after the event ends today.

"Every year, we try to do it a little bit differently," Nichols said. "The idea is to put an emphasis on just getting people here to help them find out what's available to them."

Nichols said today's event should be just as busy as Thursday and Friday, considering many veterans have jobs during the week and are unable to attend on those days.

He said his team is proactive in trying to provide services that veterans -- as well as all other men and women serving in the military and reserves -- need most, including dental, medical, vision, clothing and housing. Those who attend are given a checklist they can refer to as they walk around Beckwourth Riverfront Park.

"All of these services are in one spot for them to make things easier. If someone was to try to get these services outside, they'd have to go all over town, so this is really about convenience," Nichols said.

Today will be the last day of this year's event. It will be held at Cotton Rosser Pavilion at Beckwourth Riverfront Park in Marysville from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Those who attend are asked to bring their Veterans Affairs medical ID card or a veterans ID card. If no ID is available, they can be checked in with the appropriate agencies on site.
