Sequoyah Chapter DAR presents Quilts of Honor to WWII female veterans

Pickens County Progress - 7/27/2017

Sequoyah Chapter members enjoyed delightful summer outings to present Kathryn E. Striebich (shown far left), Blairsville and Rebecca Harber Dixon, Commerce with Quilts of Honor for their service in WWII. The beautiful quilts, in patriotic colors of red, white, and blue were handmade by Sequoyah Chapter Quilts for Veterans Committee Chair Carole English along with committee members. Carole presented each quilt and Vice Regent Mary Turner presented Certificates of Honor to the Veterans.

Both ladies served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). Miss Kathryn served as Corpsman First Class and Miss Rebecca served as Store Keeper Third Class. The WAVES program was created in August 1942 in response to the need for additional military personnel during WWII. At the end of WWII, well over 8,000 were female officers and some ten times that many enlisted WAVES? about 2½ percent of the Navy's total strength.

Thank you for your service, Ladies! We appreciate you both very much!

Sequoyah members attending the Thursday, July 20 presentation to Miss Kathryn were Mary Turner, Carole English, Carol Haas, Margie Hall, Charlotte McCloskey, Beth Finley. Regent Annette Hopgood and Treasurer Sandra Harbuck, Old Unicoi Trail DAR in Blairsville joined in the presentation.
