New Veterans Committee launched by township board

Bedford Now - 7/4/2017

A Veterans Committee has been created by the Bedford Township Board, with the goal of helping to connect township veterans to services and programs in the area.

Resident and veteran Tim Fitzgerald is the leader in this effort;, assisted by deputy supervisor Al Prieur. Others who wish to get involved can contact township supervisor’s office, and while the committee members will be officially appointed by the township board, other volunteers also are welcome.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has already supported the idea, Prieur said while introducing the concept to the board at its June 6 meeting.

The Bedford committee will meet once a month and work on projects such as sendoff and welcome home events, information about colleges and job training programs, spousal support, connecting high school students who are considering military service with veterans and other projects. For example, Fitzgerald said he’s already assembled a list of businesses that are willing to assist with care package projects.

Also at the June 6 meeting, the township board held another of its monthly recognition programs for local veterans. Each veteran who signed up ahead of time was introduced and presented with a pin.
