Yoga, Tai Chi for veterans

Claremore Daily Progress - 4/8/2019

April 08-- Apr. 8--Dustin Parker wants to share the benefits of yoga and Tai Chi with his fellow veterans.

Parker, who served in the United States military for eight years as a military police officer, can't say enough good things about yoga and Tai Chi, specifically for veterans.

He's so passionate, in fact, that he's started teaching classes in each for area veterans and their families.

"I am 100 percent disabled and I have used yoga and Tai Chi for therapy. It's good for PTSD. It's good for blood flow, arthritis, breathing, relaxation and more," Parker said. "The biggest misconception is that it isn't manly enough. But it's for everyone. ..You don't have to be a body builder or gymnast to be able to do these moves."

Parker said Tai Chi "is a program of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture fluidly flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. It is a method to find inner peace, improve balance and agility, decrease stress, anxiety and depression, and bring overall better health and mood.

Mondays and Wednesdays the classes will be held at the VFW from 4 to 4:45 p.m. for Yoga, and Tai Chi from 5 p.m. to 5:45p.m. Fridays the Yoga classes are held from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m., with Tai Chi from 6:15 to 7.

On Wednesday's yoga and Tai Chi are offered from 3 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Claremore Veteran's Center.

Parker hopes that many will elect to take both classes, as each offer different benefits for those who practice the arts. Those who wish to take the Yoga classes should bring a Yoga mat, which are available inexpensively at Walmart.

For more information on upcoming classes, call Parker at 918-944-1151 or email dustinparker1025@yahoo.com or follow Claremore Yoga and Tai Chi on Facebook.
