orangeburg men guilty in attack on veteran

Times & Democrat - 12/3/2018

Dec. 03--Two Orangeburg men are serving prison sentences for beating a disabled military veteran with his metal walker.

Samir W. Alvarado Brown, 23, of 1023 Henley Street, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery and violent second-degree burglary.

Circuit Judge Ed Dickson sentenced Brown last month to 10 years in prison. Upon the service of eight years, the remainder of his sentence will be suspended to four years of probation.

As a result of Brown's guilty pleas, prosecutors dismissed the following charges: resisting arrest, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Brown's co-defendant, Jarrah Donta Dixon, 28, of 601 Representative Circle, pleaded guilty in July to first-degree assault and battery and violent second-degree burglary.

Dickson sentenced Dixon to 10 years in prison.

Dixon's projected eligible release date is Nov. 29, 2022.

On Sept. 24, 2017, Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a State Court residence.

A 64-year-old veteran said two men broke into his home. One was dressed in a sheet.

Those two men were identified as Brown and Dixon.

The veteran said that they used his own walker to assault him.

He told deputies that Brown and Dixon took a small quantity of cash and a bank card from him at gunpoint.

The pair left the residence when they saw the veteran reach for his panic button, which he wore on his neck.

"Let's get out of here. He is about to press that button," one of the suspects called out, according to the sheriff's office incident report.

Deputies searched the area and located one of the suspects, who admitted he'd been inside the veteran's house, according to investigators.

Sheriff's office reports state that Dixon said during a brief interview an acquaintance suggested the two go to the veteran's house to get some money.

Dixon said that Brown decided to wear a bedsheet because he knew the veteran.

Investigators were able to locate the suspects' clothing and bedsheet.
