How We Create & How We Cope: Intersections of Art & Mental Health

The Queens Gazette - 1/29/2017

On Friday, February 10, from 6:30 ? 8:30 pm, the LAB at QCA presents "How We Create and How We Cope: Intersections of Art & Mental Health." Queens native, poet, and curator Audrey Dimola will host a panel and performance designed to create a safe space and foster honest dialogue about the often-stigmatized topic of mental illness, particularly in connection to the creative experience. Throughout art history there are many examples of renowned artists (like Beethoven, Van Gogh, and O'Keefe) who have grappled with mental illness. In this LAB presentation, Dimola seeks to explore through story, poetry, music, and visual art how artists create their work while coping with mental health challenges.

To what extent do the ways that we deal with challenges to our mental health inform the type of art that we create? How can we tell if our feelings are normal, and when is it time to seek help? What do those forms of help look like? Audience members are encouraged to participate in facilitated discussion, a Q&A, and sharing of resources and experiences on these topics.

The panel and performance will take place at the Queens Council on the Arts, 37-11 35th Ave. (entrance on 37th St, Astoria, NY 11101.
