Brain Health Program

Garden City Life - 1/25/2017

The healthy brain is crucial to mental health and overall well-being. This is especially true for senior citizens. As we age, there is a natural decline in brain function, i.e., memory, personality, cognitive functions, concentration and a clear active mind. There are lifestyle habits that can slow down the potential development of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Mental health deterioration, however, is not inevitable as we age. Following proper lifestyle recommendations, learning how to identify early signs of dementia, seeing a doctor and getting treatment can potentially add years of normal brain function.

With these issues and concerns in mind, the Garden City Recreation

Department is sponsoring an educational program on brain health, prevention and diagnosis on Monday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Garden City Senior Center on Golf Club Lane Dr. Alka Nischal-Rednam will be the speaker. She is a gerontologist in Winthrop-University Hospital's Geriatric Medicine Unit and has been in practice for 14 years. This program should have appeal to all seniors. To sign up, visit or call the Senior Center at 516-385-8066.
