Sentencing set in Smithfield murder case

The Herald Journal - 1/18/2017

A 26-year-old Smithfield man will likely be sentenced to the Utah State Hospital in March for the murder of his father, based on the findings of a mental health evaluation conducted by state psychologists.

Shane Hallstrom pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the stabbing death of his father on the evening of April 28, 2016.

Police said Hallstrom and his father, 58-year-old Calvin Hallstrom, planned to get together that evening, and the older man arrived at his ex-wife’s home to pick up his son at about 5:30 p.m.

Hallstrom attacked his father with a small kitchen knife; police found his father lying near the street, bleeding and unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Shane Hallstrom was arrested later that night and has been incarcerated at the Cache County Jail ever since.

In October, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill, triggering the court-ordered mental health evaluation that would help determine his current mental state and his mental state at the time of the crime.

The findings of that report have been reviewed, and Judge Kevin Allen said Tuesday that Hallstrom was found to be mentally ill when he committed the crime. The report also indicates he could pose a danger to himself or others and lacks the resources to seek treatment if he was released on probation.

Based on this ruling, Hallstrom can be ordered to serve his time in the state mental hospital. Hallstrom is scheduled to be sentenced on March 14.
