McHenry County Mental Health Board offers certified mental health first aid training

The Northwest Herald - 12/26/2016

CRYSTAL LAKE ? The McHenry County Mental Health Board and the National Council for Behavioral Health are inviting individuals to undergo training to become a certified mental health first aid instructor.

The council will offer an adult mental health first aid instructor certification training from April 3 to April 7. The deadline to apply for the certification training is Saturday.

Training will be at the McHenry County Mental Health Board building, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake.

Much like people use CPR training to assist others during a heart attack, a certified mental health first aid instructor will prepare people how to interact with someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

A mental health first aid instructor is tasked with serving as a presenter, facilitator and ambassador for the Mental Health First Aid USA program.

Candidates who want to become a certified instructor are required to have a general knowledge of mental health and substance use issues, experience teaching groups of adults, understand the best practices for adult learning and know how to facilitate groups.

Applications can be submitted to www.mc708.org. For information, contact Denise Bowman at dbowman@mc708.org.
