GHS students win in psych-tech competition

Lodi News-Sentinel - 12/21/2016

Dec. 21--GALT -- Four Galt High School juniors and one freshman recently worked to create a functional Android-based app to help students and adults who suffer from social anxiety and panic disorders, a feat that ultimately earned them first place in a regional competition.

It was a seven-week process before members of the school's BEST Academy presented their project at the 1st Annual Psych-Tech App Development competition sponsored by California State University, Sacramento, CRANE, and the Sacramento Valley Psychological Association last month.

Along with 11 other teams from high schools around the region, local students presented their app to an audience of psychiatrists, psychologists, computer science professors and industry professionals.

Local students Celio Gonzalez, Zulema Corrales, Tiffany Su, Jessica Lyon and Simran Binning, took home first prize for Best Conceptual Design.

"These students worked incredibly hard and won the praise of everyone in attendance," said Jason Lopez, Galt High science teacher/department chairperson, said in an email.

He even received several offers from university professors and industry professionals who were willing to continue working with the team to further develop their app pro bono.
