BRIEF: 'ADHD: Half century of misdiagnosis?'

Aug. 09--I was diagnosed with ADD as an adult and prescribed the drug Adderall. I believed the drug helped me focus. I went off Adderall after a couple of years, and I was able to stay focused. A granddaughter was diagnosed with ADHD at age 10. She never went on medication. She is now a mostly-A student and a rising high school sophomore.
Were we each misdiagnosed?
A September book, "ADHD Nation: Children, Doctors, Big Pharma, and the Making of An American Edpidemic," by New York Times investigative reporter Alan Schwarz, should be enlightening. It takes a cold look at the "misdiagnosis" of the ADHD disorder and how its "unchecked growth" over 50 years has made ADHD "one of the most controversial conditions in medicine, with serious effects on children, adults and society."
