VA warns fireworks can be cause for concern for some veterans

Topeka Capital Journal (KS) - 7/3/2016

Fourth of July celebrations can cause concerns for veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

"The auditory and visual triggers of fireworks can result in veterans experiencing a temporary increase in some PTSD symptoms, and this situation is often further complicated by fireworks being used unexpectedly during an extended period of time around the Fourth of July," said VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System staff psychologist Jim Sharpnack.

The VA recommends that community members reach out to neighbors to find out whether they are veterans and, if so, how they feel about fireworks.

The agency also suggests that affected veterans practice being around loud noises before the holiday to decrease the effect of the noises, or wear noise-canceling headphones.

Crowds also may present problems.

Other tips for veterans include:

n Exercise good self-care and use coping skills.

n Deal with problems early.

n Be aware of warning signs, such as frequent conflicts, severe depressed or angry moods, or being hyper-alert.

n Seek support from family, friends and professionals as needed.
