March of Dimes provides training for health leaders

Daily Press (Victorville, CA) - 6/9/2016

June 09--APPLE VALLEY -- The March of Dimes will host a Healthy Babies Are Worth the Wait training event on Thursday for medical professionals and staff personnel from agencies that serve women of childbearing age.

The goals of the preterm prevention program is to increase the understanding about maternal mental health, particularly postpartum depression, increase the number of providers who screen their patients/clients for mental health issues and get more women to the services they need.

Thursday's training event, Helping Patients with Maternal Mental Health Issues, will be led by psychologist Katayune Kaeni. It is clinical in nature and is targeted to doctors who will learn about intervening and support women who have screened positive. The free training includes dinner and educational materials for patients.

March of Dimes program team lead Marta Bills has organized several training events that will teach participants how to differentiate between "baby blues" and postpartum depression, to use screening tools for clients to help identify postpartum depression, to identify risk factors that make a woman more susceptible for maternal mental health disorders and to use local resources for women who have symptoms of postpartum depression.

A community resource list, which includes mental health resources, including a brand new postpartum support group, will be distributed at the training. Attendees also will learn about San Bernardino County Department of Public and Behavioral Health's mental health-focused project that encourages women to call 211 for referrals for help.

Planning has begun on future clinical training on Tobacco and Substance Abuse and Preterm Birth Prevention.

The training is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Health, St. Mary's Administrative Building Conference Room, 18300 Highway 18 in Apple Valley.
