BRIEF: Course to focus on helping youths with mental health issues

May 08--Moorpark police are offering a free course this month aimed at helping adults recognize when youths are struggling with mental health problems.

Participants will gain knowledge about how to help youths ages 12 to 18 who are experiencing mental health challenges, substance abuse, anxiety and depression, police said. The course also will cover assessing for the risk of suicide or harm, listening without judgment, giving reassurance, encouraging appropriate professional help and encouraging self-help, authorities said.

The course will meet from 5:30-9:30 p.m.May 25 and 26 at Moorpark City Hall, 799 Moorpark Ave., officials said. Contact certified trainer Mary Ellen Collins at 657-4408 or mecollins@voice4families.com to register.

Funding for the class is being provided by the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department.
