BRIEF: Upcoming discussion will focus on mental illness, addiction

Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City) - 1/24/2016

Jan. 24--Oklahomans in recovery for mental illness and addiction will share their stories at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at District House, 1755 NW 16, during an event hosted by The Oklahoman.

During this discussion, Oklahomans diagnosed with a mental illness or who have experienced addiction will share their personal stories.

Also, mental health professionals will talk about what barriers they face in providing care to low-income, uninsured residents.

Audience members will be able to ask questions during the discussion.

This discussion is part of a yearlong project on mental illness and addiction in Oklahoma, titled "Epidemic Ignored." Health reporter Jaclyn Cosgrove is investigating the state's mental health system. Her project focuses on low-income, uninsured residents with mental illnesses and/or substance use disorders.

The project is part of a fellowship through the Carter Center, a nonprofit public policy center founded by former President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter to fight disease and oppression around the world.

The event is free, but seating will be limited. To attend, please RSVP by email with the subject line "Mental health event" to oklahomanevents@oklahoman.com.
