Bluefield Daily Telegraph (WV) - 11/23/2015

Nov. 23--BLUEFIELD -- The Mercer County Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention brought together sponsors with individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide for a morning session in Bethany Hall of the first Christian Church in Bluefield. The event was held in conjunction with International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.

The Saturday morning session included a welcome from Heather Bennett, co-chair of the West Virginia Chapter, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a screening of "Family Journey's" and a discussion/question period led by Teresa Paine, Ph.D./LCP.

Marie Blackwell provided a "Survivors Story," at the session.

"We have to be able to drop our masks and talk about our feelings," Blackwell said. "We have to be able to share."

Rob Merritt, Ph.D., spoke about "Poetry Therapy," followed by a table discussion with facilitators. Assaad Mounzer, M.D., led a meditation center.

Bennett conducted the closing ceremony that was titled: "Seasons of Change."

"Our community is full of organizations and mental health professionals who have embraced and assisted with the AFSP West Virginia Chapter's suicide prevention and support efforts," according to the program. "Thank you to those who served, shared, taught, encouraged and lead today."

In addition to the presenters, event organizers thanked Doug McDaniel Jr., pastor of First Christmas Church.
