The Colony murder suspect may suffer from mental health issues

Colony Courier-Leader, The (TX) - 11/13/2015

The Colony police said the suspect in Monday's murder appeared to have some form of mental health issues, but officials do not yet know if those were a factor in the murder.

According to police, early Monday morning Rusty Kelley, a 46-year-old resident of The Colony, murdered his mother in her home located in the 4800 block of Sunset Circle. The call came out around 1:15 a.m. as a possible assault in progress at the home. When officers arrived Kelley, who was covered in blood, was leaving the home. He told the officers that he had just killed his mother.

"We do not know if the murder was premeditated or what exactly led up to the killing," said Lt. Darren Brockway. "It does appear as if the attack happened suddenly and without warning."

After taking Kelley into custody, police entered the home. Yougja Kelley, the 76-year-old mother, was found in the bathroom dead from "apparent blunt force trauma and stab wounds."

Police said the murder weapon was a kitchen knife. They believe the blunt force trauma was caused by Kelley's hands.

Kelley was taken to The Colony Jail and charged with murder.

"The suspect has spoken to detectives and has confessed," Brockway said. "The suspect will not answer to what his motives were straightforwardly."

Detectives processed the crime scene but are still working through all the evidence gathered.

"We are sending off forensic evidence to the lab to be processed and analyzed," Brockway said. "The investigation is ongoing."

Brockway said Kelley lived next door to his mother.
