UNF binge-eating study

News Leader (Fernandina Beach, FL) - 10/7/2015

The Nutrition and Dietetics Flagship Program at the University of North Florida is currently recruiting participants for a web-based binge-eating disorder intervention study.

Binge-eating disorder is a serious eating disorder in which a patient frequently consumes unusually large amounts of food and feels that she or he is unable to stop eating. BED is the most prevalent eating disorder that affects 2 to 5 percent of the general population, approximately 3 million men and 5 million women in the United States, according to a news release.

Funded by a grant from the UNF Brooks College of Health and in collaboration with FruitStreet.com, a telehealth software company, faculty in the Nutrition and Dietetics Flagship Program will be researching and determining if a web-based intervention could help treat patients with a binge-eating disorder.

In this study, psychotherapists and registered dieticians who are specialized in eating disorders will provide three months of complimentary counseling to BED patients, either via face-to-face sessions or via safe and secure video conferencing software.

UNF Researchers are currently recruiting participants for this study. Participants should be female and 18 years or older, with a body mass index between 25 and 40, a demonstrated binge-eating behavior and available/accessible Internet access. Participants may be compensated for their time.
