BRIEF: Bikers ride for mental health awareness in Oklahoma

Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City) - 9/23/2015

Sept. 23--NORMAN -- Motorcycle enthusiasts and others wanting to raise mental health awareness participated in the area's first "Ride to End Stigma," which raised money for the Oklahoma chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI.

The Sept. 12 ride began at Fort Thunder Harley in Moore and included a police escort to the IOOF Cemetery in Norman, where riders paid tribute to mental health patients who died in a 1918 fire.

Terri White, the state's commissioner of mental health and substance abuse services, spoke at the brief ceremony that recognized the lives of 40 boys and young men who lost their lives nearly 100 years ago in a ward fire at what was then Central State Hospital.

The ride continued to various other stops in the metro area before concluding at Fort Thunder Harley.

NAMI Oklahoma provides education, support and training to individuals and families affected by mental illness and suicide. For more information about the organization, email michelle@namioklahoma or call 607-6018.
