Youth mental health workshops being offered

Sept. 18--HENDERSON, Ky. -- Henderson County Schools is helping sponsor a series of parent/community workshops addressing Youth Mental Health First Aid.

The school system has partnered with Lighthouse Counseling Services and the Henderson Police Department to offer the workshops, which are free and open to the public. They will all be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Professional Development Center, located at 641 N. Green St.

The first workshop in the series will be held Sept. 29. The program titled, "Addressing the Mental Health Crisis -- What Really Matters" will be given by James Schroeder, Ph.D., HSPP.

Schroeder is a child psychologist who specializes in services for children and young adolescents. He treats children with developmental, social, learning, mood, attention, anxiety and behavior issues.

He received his undergraduate degree in psychology at Ball State University and graduated with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University after completing his internship at Kosair Children's Hospital through the University of Louisville, School of Medicine.

He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at St. Louis Children's Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine and was in practice at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center where he was an adjunct professor at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Schroeder also had a role as the psychologist in the Pediatric Sleep Center and served as a consultant with the Missouri Autism Centers of Excellence before joining St. Mary's Center for Children in Evansville.

Schroeder writes a monthly column entitled Just Thinking which is designed to address issues that are important for parents and professionals working with youth.

Other programs in the series include the following:

Nov. 10: "Building Resiliency and Coping Skills in Adolescents." Speaker: Dr. Libby Brown with Methodist Hospital Prevention and Wellness Services.

Feb. 16: "Effective Parenting -- Raising a Happy and Healthy Child." Speaker: Janet Messer with Lighthouse Counseling Services.

April 28: A panel presentation from local and regional mental health care providers.
