BRIEF: Pines police take armed man into custody for mental health evaulation

South Florida Sun Sentinel (FL) - 9/14/2015

Sept. 14--Reports of a suspicious vehicle near North Perry Airport on Monday morning drew Pembroke Pines police to the airfield's perimeter road.

Officers encountered a man in a 2004 green Nissan pickup whose passenger-side window had been shattered, apparently by gunfire, Pembroke Pines Police spokeswoman Amanda Conwell said.

The man, 39, who police are not yet identifying, wore a gun in a holster on his hip when officers encountered him at 101 SW 77th Way, which is east of South University Drive and south of Pines Boulevard, according to the agency.

The man put the gun inside the truck and police took him into custody and to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, Conwell said.

Though police have found that the gunshots were fired from inside the truck, it was not yet known where the gunfire happened or why, Conwell said.

Investigators ask anyone with information to contact Pembroke Pines Police at 954-431-2200, email Tips@ppines.com or call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
