Profs' writing project aims to aid caregivers in mental health

Brandon Sun, The (Manitoba, Canada) - 9/11/2015

Two professors from Brandon University's faculty of health studies psychiatric nursing program have collaborated on a new book aimed at supporting caregivers in the mental health field.

The book, called "Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Illness," was co-authored by Debra Dusome and John Simpson, who is now retired. It explores topics of interest to those who provide care for individuals with co-occurring intellectual disabilities and mental illness.

"The book has links to resources and information for professionals who care for people with both developmental challenges and mental health issues," Dusome said. "This is a very stigmatized and vulnerable population and there are limited user-friendly resources for day-to-day caregivers."

The book builds and emphasizes key points for caregivers, and presents current evidence-informed practice knowledge.

It examines an understanding of client behaviours so caregivers can develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote positive changes to the environment and quality of life for those they care for with this dual diagnosis.

"I am extremely proud of faculty members, Debra Dusome and John Simpson, for co-authoring this new book," said health studies dean Dean Care. "This publication will surely have a positive impact on the evolving field of intellectual disabilities."

"Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Illness" is available for free as an open access resource at opentextbc.ca/caregivers.
