BRIEF: Fire displaces 6 from mental health facility

Citizens' Voice, The (Wilkes-Barre, PA) - 7/19/2015

July 19--A fire that broke out Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre forced out half a dozen residents from a home for people with mental and intellectual disabilities.

Assistant city Fire Chief William Murtha said the fire started around 1:30 p.m. at 653 Hazle St. and was contained to the basement. No one was injured, he said.

Murtha said there were six people living at the home, which is owned by Step By Step Inc., a private, nonprofit corporation that provides support services to children and adults in Pennsylvania with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and autism.

The displaced individuals are being housed at one of the several other residences owned by the nonprofit, Murtha said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined pending an investigation expected to be done early next week, Murtha said. The investigation is routine, and nothing seems suspicious about the cause, he added.
