BRIEF: Man who set himself on fire at Ontario college was about to receive mental health services, police say

Idaho Statesman (Boise) - 6/4/2015

June 04--A 22-year-old man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire on the Treasure Valley Community College campus Wednesday, according to the Ontario, Ore., Police Department.

Ramon Fry apparently poured gasoline on himself and lit the fuel with a lighter, police stated in a Thursday press release. After becoming engulfed in flames, Fry attempted to put out the fire by jumping into a courtyard fountain. Police, fire and paramedics arrived on the scene at about 12:10 p.m. and transported Fry to a hospital.

The police department was in the process of helping to coordinate mental health services for Fry, the release states. Though his intent behind Wednesday's act is undetermined, it does not appear he was trying to kill himself, police said.

Fry suffered severe burns across his body and was sent to a burn center in Utah to treat life-threatening injuries. He is still in critical condition, police said.

Police said Treasure Valley Community College is offering counseling services to students who witnessed the event or know Fry. Police also encourage those suffering from mental health issues to seek out professional help.
