BRIEF: Rev. Wayne Woods talks with Keenagers about mental illness

April 15--MOULTRIE -- Pastor Wayne Woods spoke to the First Baptist Church Keenagers about mental illness and suicide.

Mental illness includes such disorders as bipolar, major depression, schizophrenia, and etc.

Mental illness can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income. It is not the result of personal weakness or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders. They cannot be overcome by will power and are not related to a person s character or intelligence.

Mental illness can be the cause of suicides. For every 14 suicides, there are many more that thinks about it. The highest rate of suicides are the age of 85+. Men are the highest rate but women's attempts are higher.

Woods said people should be more aware of and ask questions and listen to the person and be compassionate to them. By all means get help for the troubled.

Marvin Clayton opened the meeting. Loren Hildebrandt had the devotion. His topic was Focus of Faith. He also said the blessing for the covered dish luncheon. Hostess were Keenager officers.

Norma Jean Martin provided the music. Door prizes went to Dot Mims and Marvin Clayton.
