BRIEF: St. Mary's talk to address 'mental health crisis'

Evansville Courier & Press (IN) - 3/24/2015

March 24--St. Mary's pediatric psychologist, Dr. Jim Schroeder, will present "Addressing the Mental Health Crisis: What Really Matters" on April 23 at the St. Mary's amphitheater in the basement of the main hospital. The talk is free, and open to adults.

Psychological difficulties, including anxiety, depression, manic behaviors and delinquency are on the rise. Mental disorders and substance abuse are now the leading cause of nonfatal illness worldwide. Suicide is the number three cause of death. Suicide rates have increased by almost 30% in the last 15 years in the United States. In 1987, there were less than 20,000 severely mentally disabled children. More than 20 years later, there are more than 600,000.

Schroeder will speak about pathways to pursue in turning the tide.

The talk will run from 6:30-8 p.m. An optional Q & A will follow. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Continuing education credits will be available for medical personnel and mental health professionals. No registration is required. For more information, contact Kelly Shaw at 812-485-4419.
