Munhall man pleads guilty but mentally ill in mother's shooting death

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - 2/28/2015

Feb. 27--A Munhall man charged in the 2013 shooting death of his mother, with whom he shared a residence, pleaded guilty but mentally ill today to one count of third degree murder and a firearms violation, according to district attorney spokesman Mike Manko.

Anthony Scholl, 43, was sentenced to 20 to 50 years in prison in exchange for the plea, Mr. Manko said in an e-mail.

The shooting was reported by Scholl's sister on March 28, 2013, shortly before 10 a.m. When police arrived at the residence, they found Scholl's mother, Bernadett Scholl, dead on a bed in the living room with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, detectives wrote in a criminal complaint.

Scholl's siblings told police that their brother called them that morning to tell them that he had shot their mother because she upset him. He barricaded himself on the second-floor of the residence and after a roughly two and a half hour stand-off he was tasered and taken into custody, the complaint said.

Authorities executed a search warrant and found three firearms on the second floor, where Scholl was arrested and detained by police, detectives wrote.

According to online court documents, Scholl pleaded guilty to an assault charge in May 2008 and was sentenced to 6 months to a year in jail.

A phone message seeking comment from Scholl's attorney, Christopher Patarini, was not immediately returned.
