Mental Health Association honors advocates

Wilson Daily Times (NC) - 2/14/2015

Feb. 14--Jean Collier doesn't believe her legacy is based on her status or wealth in life.

As a long-term Mental Health Association board member, Collier was recognized for her life and service with a Mental Health Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Collier was recognized during the nonprofit's annual banquet on Feb. 3 at Something Different restaurant.

"It is a sad night for the Mental Health Association in Wilson County and for our board because after many, many, many years on the board, Jean Collier is retiring tonight," said Gronna Jones, president of the Mental Health Association board of directors. "So for her unparalleled devotion to MHA-Wilson and to those living with mental illness in Wilson County, we are honored tonight to present her with the Mental Health Association Lifetime Achievement Award."

Collier has been an integral part of the organization during her 28 years of service on the board of directors. She stepped down as a board member this month. She said she hopes her volunteer efforts have made a difference.

"In 100 years, it will not matter what kind of bank account I had, or what kind of house I lived in, or what kind of car I drove, but maybe it made a difference that I volunteered," Collier said after receiving the award. "I encourage everyone here tonight to volunteer for the Mental Health Association. This is an honor I always hoped I would receive but I really didn't think I was qualified for it."

The association also recognized Collier's husband, Earnest, who has also been a supporter and volunteer for the organization for many years.

"Pretty much wherever Jean was, there was Earnest . . . volunteering whenever he was needed, doing what was needed," Jones said. "Tonight, we honor him with a certificate of appreciation for years of devoted volunteer service. Your efforts have made a world of difference in what we have been able to accomplish."

The Mental Health Association, a United Way member agency, provides education, support and advocacy to people in the Wilson County area.

Rep. Susan Martin, R-Wilson, was the guest speaker at the annual banquet this year. Martin spoke about the importance of volunteers and advocates in communities to keep elected officials informed about important issues and trends. She also said she is working hard to provide walk-in crisis facilities in every county in the state so residents don't need to be sent to hospitals in other counties.

The association also presented its highest annual award to its board secretary, Shartra Sylivant. The Frances Barshay Award is given to individuals or organizations who volunteer countless hours of dedicated service in the fight for victory over mental illness in Wilson County.

"This year's Barshay Award winner is invaluable to the board, our executive director and to so many families going through crises in Wilson," Jones said.

"She volunteers for almost every MHA event; has critical information and input for board and committee meetings because she works in the mental health system trenches; was absolutely key this past year is getting our new crisis therapy component within the Barshay Programs for Youth going and continues to monitor that therapy; has represented MHA-Wilson at speaking engagements, even at the very last minute when called upon; and for three years now has dutifully taken and maintained board and executive committee minutes as our board of directors' secretary."

Sylivant is a clinical psychologist with the Wilson County Department of Social Services.

"I am honored to work with the Mental Health Association in Wilson County," she said. "I have been inspired by the consumers and our board members. The Barshay Award represents our striving to improve the lives of those with mental illness."
