SSU tackles eating disorders

Portsmouth Daily Times, The (OH) - 1/2/2015

Jan. 02--On Jan. 24, Shawnee State University's (SSU) Gamma Nu chapter of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner, with all proceeds going to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Inc. (ANAD). The dinner, located at Hope Café on Chillicothe Street, will last from 6-8 p.m.

ANAD is a non-profit corporation that seeks to prevent and alleviate the problems of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

ANAD advocates for the development of healthy attitudes, bodies, and behaviors. ANAD promotes eating disorder awareness, prevention and recovery through supporting, educating, and connecting individuals, families and professionals.

The Hope Café is also non-profit, relying on donations to maintain a Christian atmosphere centered on home-cooked meals.

Owner of the Hope Café John Blair has been operating the restaurant on Chillicothe for three months. Blair claims it took him 14 years and much guidance from God, but he is proud of what he has created.

Blair said he is inspired by the U.S. Constitution which reads -- "We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor." He said it is deep in his heart for the people in the U.S. to come to the knowledge of that passage and when people come into Hope Cafe they give their best. Blair said that may sound like a strange concept, but it makes perfect sense to him.

The cost is $8 for single tickets and $13 for couples. Half of the proceeds from the Spaghetti Dinner will be donated to ANAD and the other half will go to the Hope Café.

"I am passionate about volunteering and assisting those in need," Delta Ohi Epsilon Vice President of programming Bril Brothag explained. "I believe we, as members of Delta Phi Epsilon, should help the goals of philanthropy groups and volunteer as much as possible."

Brothag explained that the decision to help ANAD came from the organizations affiliation with the national chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon.

A member of Delta Phi became aware of Hope Café last semester and wanted to work with them on a project. The group is happy to be doing so now and is proud to help them with half of the proceeds.

"The Hope Café is a terrific place with a great mission and we are more than happy to be partnering with them and helping them out as well," Brothag said.
