BRIEF: Student art exhibit gets inside mental illness

LaGrange Daily News (GA) - 10/13/2014

Oct. 13--An art exhibit Monday at Cochran Gallery displaying works by LaGrange, Troup and Callaway high schools students about mental illness in support of the upcoming "Holden On" film drew a big crowd to Cochran Gallery.

The one-day exhibit showcased students' artwork displaying the nature of mental illness and their take on the personality of Holden Layfield, subject of "Holden On." Layfield was a popular LaGrange High School student who, despite his bright, upbeat personality, struggled with schizophrenia and self-medicated with substance abuse, eventually committing suicide.

LHS alumnus Tamlin Hall, who knew Layfield in school and now is a Hollywood screenwriter, plans to go into production on the long-running project next month. The film will be shot mostly in Troup County.

The artwork created by the students will be sold in a silent auction at a fundraiser to help raise the last of the funds to produce the movie, set for Oct. 30 at Del'Avant.
