National Depression Screening Day marked in Monroe County

Sept. 12--Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg University and Northampton Community College will offer a variety of activities related to National Depression Screening Day. The first event is Saturday.
The Mental Health and Substance Abuse seminar with free depression screenings will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday at the new NCC Monroe Campus, Pocono Hall Gymnasium.
The seminar is being organized in conjunction with the National Depression Screening Day of Oct. 9. It is sponsored by state Rep. Mario Scavello and Pocono Medical Center.
Depression screenings with a behavioral health professional will last between 15 to 20 minutes. It is free and confidential.
Appointments are suggested for depression screenings, although walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment, call 570-476-3393, or email events@poconomedicalcenter.org.
From noon to 1 p.m. in the gymnasium, an interactive panel discussion with expert professionals will have an open dialogue on the state of behavioral and mental health in Monroe County.

Other activities will take place the week of Oct. 6-13 in recognition of National Depression Screening Day.
Journalist Peter Early, author of "Crazy: a Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness" will give a mental health talk at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Niedbala Auditorium in the Hoeffner Science and Technology Center at ESU. The speech is free and open to the public.
And PMC will offer a showing of the movie "Reign Over Me" at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Pocono Community Theater, 88 S. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg. A discussion and question and answer session will follow the movie. The event is free and also open to the public.
