Mental health focus of community walk in Wheat City in Oct.

Brandon Sun, The (Manitoba, Canada) - 9/10/2014

Brandon is turning purple for World Mental Health Awareness Day -- at least the sign at city hall is.

The city is helping the Brandon University Anti-Bullying Society to raise awareness of mental health, suicide and cyberbullying issues.

On Oct. 10, the lights that shine on the main city hall sign will be purple.

"We are excited to have the city's support with this campaign," anti-bullying society president Krystal Kayne said. "Our mission as a Brandon University Student Union club is to raise awareness to help prevent tragedies of suicide and stop acts of bullying with our children, students, and community members."

The group has planned a community walk in partnership with the Amanda Todd Legacy Society.

"We want to make this the biggest walk that Brandon has done to date," Kayne said.

The walk is planned for Oct. 10 starting at the BU Healthy Living Centre.

Organizers will be giving purple and pink glowsticks to the first 1,250 walkers and glow necklaces can be purchased for $1.

Local businesses and the city have been asked to show their support by changing their light bulbs to purple for the evening.

"This night is all about awareness," Kayne said. "We want to end suicide and stigma."

No registration is required for the walk. People are asked to arrive at the Healthy Living Centrebetween 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
