C.F. students to have access to mental health services

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (IA) - 8/12/2014

Aug. 12--CEDAR FALLS -- Students in the Cedar Falls Community School District will soon have access to two mental health counselors.

During its meeting Monday evening, the Cedar Falls Board of Education approved a year-long contract with SuccessLink, a Missouri-based education organization.

The $93,000 contract is the first of its kind for the Cedar Falls Community School District, Superintendent Andy Pattee said.

"We have not had direct mental health services in the past," Pattee said. "We wish to provide services to our student populations who need support to continue to foster and focus on excellence for each and every student."

The Board of Education has been working on the agreement with SuccessLink for several months, Pattee said.

"We will have two individuals working with students who have been identified with mental health needs," Pattee said. "Parents have arranged appointments, given written permission and have worked through the process."

The contract will last until June 30.

In other news, Floyd Winter, president of Cedar Falls Community Schools Foundation, donated $6,300 to the district.

"It really is gratifying to see the year's results," Winter said.

The funds were raised by the foundation's 2013 Tradition of Excellence mail campaign, a volunteer effort in which thousands of request for donations are sent out to former alumni and community members all over the nation.

Each year's donations are aimed at meeting a target amount decided by the Board of Education.

This year's funds will pay for a Professional Learning Community Training conference district teachers attended in Minneapolis this summer.
