BRIEF: Goodhue County opens new mental health facility

Post-Bulletin (Rochester, MN) - 4/3/2014

April 03--RED WING -- After months of construction, about 30 local officials were on hand Wednesday for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at a new mental health facility in Red Wing.

Hiawatha Valley Mental Health opened the doors of its new 2,400-square-foot building Monday, but Goodhue County Board Chairman Ron Allen and HVMH executive director Julie Hanson formally welcomed it to the community Wednesday

The facility will serve about 1,200 mental health patients within Goodhue County after the county board voted to privatize that portion of its Health and Human Services Department in late 2013. Hanson's Winona-based enterprise already serves Wabasha, Winona, Fillmore and Houston counties.

"I think it's a big step in providing mental health services for more people," Allen said. "Our goal is to branch out and have a second site eventually, maybe in Zumbrota.

"It's important to make mental health more accessible."

The mental health facility is in a multi-use building along U.S. 61 across from McDonald's. Construction began in January to create the space to Hanson's desired specifications.
