UND to offer counseling online; mental health clinic says rural patients could benefit

Grand Forks Herald (ND) - 3/6/2014

March 06--Going to the doctor won't require an actual visit to the doctor's office after UND begins its mental health tele-clinic.

The university already offers counseling and other services to students and the general public at Montgomery Hall. Now, patients will be able to chat by video with their physicians.

Clinic Director Holly Dannewitz said the new service is ideal for residents of rural communities who can't drive the distance to Grand Forks. "They can log into a computer and then our students can log in where we're at and do a therapy session that way."

UND graduate students will provide counseling for various types of mental health issues or diagnosis of ADHD.

Grants from the Graduate Psychology Education Program pay for part of the service with the rest to be paid by patients based on their income and family situation. The cost to patients could be as low as $2 per session.

Graduate Student Melissa Quincer works at the clinic and said the unique service would be a big asset for UND and the surrounding community. "I've worked at rural sites that our program is connected with so I'm very excited to see what it's like to provide services without having to drive that hour and a half."

The clinic will be open noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday with tele-counseling available during those hours.

To learn more: UND will host an open house with a demonstration on the third floor of Montgomery Hall from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today.
